Writing Collaboratively

Image
Welcome back, ladies and gentlemen! Tonight, we are going to be talking about writing collaboratively. This is a vital skill to have because you will be interacting with people for the rest of your life! Let’s take a closer look at writing collaboratively. Advantages of collaboration •    Draws a wider skills base. ·          Suppose an accountant must write our patients financial document/receipt after we offer our services. Accountants for sure know more about finance than we do. •     Improves communication of employees ·          Since dietitians work with a multitude of employees in different work settings (accountants, doctors, physicians, athletic trainers), it encourages us to communicate effectively with one another to achieve the common goal. •    Helps acclimate new employees to an organization ·     ...

Welcome back all! Tonight I'm throwing a bit of a curveball to you all. In my technical writing class, we were instructed to create an infographic using the website Canva. The purpose for this infographic was to inform people about information that we had acquired from a different course from our major. I chose to educate people on how to "Save The Bay" by following simple steps that will reduce harm to our marine life. After taking a trip down to Save The Bay in my Community Nutrition course, I quickly learned that the small actions I was taking daily were potentially harming nearby marine life and our environment. I think it is important that we are aware of what we are doing to marine life, because it directly affects our planet as well. Here's my infographic that I created! I hope you find it within you to take action- just remember that even one small step goes a long way.

Researching Your Subject

Welcome back, everyone! I hope you’re having an amazing week! Today I am going to be sharing with you about conducting research when writing technical documents. In the field of nutrition, there are always new diets being discovered. We must conduct and analyze research that will prove theories about these new ways of eating. There are two main types of research that we will be discussing today: 1)    Primary research 2)    Secondary research In primary research, we discover and create information and data ourselves. In secondary research, we find information (whether it’s from nutritional academic journals, or other research previously conducted experiments) that help us better understand the topic we are researching. Choosing Appropriate Research Methods There are many different types of research methods that are used in the nutrition field daily. As dietitians, if we were researching how the keto diet does not help our patients...

Understanding our Purpose and Audience

Image
Welcome back all! Last week was pretty hectic for me with softball, classes, and homework, but I’m so ready to get back on track. Now, let’s get down to business. This week we will be talking about how to analyze our audience and purpose when writing technical documents. Are we writing to our patients? Our peers? What is the message we are trying to convey? Let’s take a closer look: Understanding Audience and Purpose Suppose we are designing an infographic to our patients about how to incorporate more fruits and vegetables into their diet. The infographic is going to be colorful, informative, energetic, and probably less formal. Also, we would use vocabulary that is not too scientific where our patients wouldn’t understand.   If the infographic has all of those characteristics, it makes the information appealing to the audience and easy to read and encourages them to incorporate the fruits and veggies daily. On the other hand, if we were creating a PowerPoint present...

Writing Technical Documents Step by Step

Image
Welcome back all! Today we will be talking about the steps in writing a technical document. Blah, I know, but I will try to keep this as energetic as possible! Let's say we are creating a brochure that persuades pregnant women to eat healthily. There are 5 important steps we must follow in order to create a successful document. These steps include: Planning Drafting Revising  Editing Proofreading It is important to note that these steps are not in chronological order. Think in terms of this scenario: we create a meal plan for a professional athlete. We later come to find out that our athlete is allergic to gluten, and we have whole wheat toast listed as a part of their breakfast. What do we do next? We must go back to our meal plan and revise it, then proofread it, and then send it off to our peer to revise and edit themselves. Challenges get thrown into the mix more times than not and we must be prepared to work forward and backward to find thei...

What the heck is techical writing anyways?

What exactly is technical writing/communication? a form of communication through documents such as proposals, emails, reports, podcasts, computer help files, blogs, and wikis. As dietitians, knowing how to formally communicate with peers and patients through formal documents will be an important daily task. Technical writing mainly uses:   Communication that helps others learn about a subject, carry out a task or make a decision.   For example, if you’re working with a patient who has Type 2 diabetes, it is important to communicate with them why they must avoid and incorporate certain foods into their diet. You may have to have your patient watch a 5-minute video about the science behind their food choices and how it can positively or negatively affect their disease. Communication that reinforces or changes attitudes and motivates readers to take action. As aspiring dietitians, challenges we may face are the patients who are reluctant to change their die...
